Arsenic toxicity to cladocerans isolated and associated with iron: implications for aquatic environments Anais da ABC (AABC)
SALES,SUELLEN C.M.; RIETZLER,ARNOLA C.; RIBEIRO,MARCELA M..
ABSTRACT Arsenic is an ametal ubiquitous in nature and known by its high toxicity. Many studies have tried to elucidate the arsenic metabolism in the cell and its impact to plants, animals and human health. In aqueous phase, inorganic arsenic is more common and its oxidation state (As III and As V) depends on physical and chemical environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate toxicity of arsenic to Daphnia similis and Ceriodaphnia silvestrii, isolated and associated with iron. The results showed differences in toxicity of As III and As V to both species. Effective concentration (EC50) mean values were 0.45 mg L-1 (As III) and 0.54 mg L-1 (As V) for D. similis, and 0.44 mg L-1 (As III) and 0.69 mg L-1 (As V) for C. silvestrii. However, As...

Assessment of ammonia toxicity in contaminated sediments in the upper Scheldt (Belgium): the development and application of toxicity identification evaluation procedures OMA
Van Sprang, P.; Janssen, C.R.; Sabayasachi, M.; Benijts, F.; Persoone, G..
The toxicity of sediment pore waters from 4 sites in the Upper Scheldt war characterized using modified Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedures The samples from all locations exhibited acute toxicity to the freshwater crustacean Thamnocephalus platyurus. The IIE approach was conducted using an enlarged battery of fractionation tests. Toxicity was removed or reduced significantly by the cation exchange resins and the air-stripping test at pH 11. Additionally, increased toxicity war observed at higher pH while a reduced toxicity war found at a decreased pH. From these TIE studies, ammonia war identified as the dominant toxic agent.

Bioaccumulation of trace elements in pelagic fish from the Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Kojadinovic, Jessica; Potier, Michel; Le Corre, Matthieu; Cosson, Richard P.; Bustamante, Paco.
Trace elements were analyzed in fish of commercial interest to determine their importance in marine systems of the Western Indian Ocean and their bioaccumulation patterns. The results are equivalent or lower than levels reported in ichthyofauna worldwide. Certain values of muscular Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn were, however, above thresholds for human consumption. Levels varied among tissues, species and fish length, but were seldom influenced by the nutritional condition of the fish, its gender and its reproductive status. Correlations between hepatic Hg and Se levels in Swordfish (r(2) = 0.747) and Yellowfin Tunas (r(2) = 0.226), and among metallothionein linking metals imply the existence of detoxification processes in these species. Level differences between fish...

Cellular and biochemical responses of the oyster Crassostrea gigas to controlled exposures to metals and Alexandrium minutum ArchiMer
Haberkorn, Hansy; Lambert, Christophe; Le Goic, Nelly; Quere, Claudie; Bruneau, A; Riso, Ricardo; Auffret, Michel; Soudant, Philippe.
Effects of simultaneous exposure of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, to both a harmful dinoflagellate that produces Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST), Alexandrium minutum, and cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), were assessed. Oysters were exposed to a mix of Cd-Cu with two different diets (i.e. A. minutum or Tisochrysis lutea) and compared to control oysters fed A. minutum or T. lutea, respectively, without metal addition. Metals and PST accumulations, digestive gland lipid composition, and cellular and biochemical hemolymph variables were measured after 4 days of exposure. Oysters exposed to Cd-Cu accumulated about thirty-six times less PSTs than oysters exposed to A. minutum alone. Exposure to Cd-Cu induced significant changes in neutral lipids (increase in...

Dissolved and particulate metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb) in two habitats from an active hydrothermal field on the EPR at 13 degrees N ArchiMer
Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Lannuzel, D; Waeles, M; Crassous, Philippe; Le Bris, Nadine; Caprais, Jean-claude; Fouquet, Yves; Fabri, Marie-claire; Riso, R.
The distribution of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd between the dissolved (<2 mu m) and the particulate (>2 mu m) fractions was measured after in-situ filtration in two hydrothermal habitats. The total metal concentration ranges exhibit a clear enrichment compared with the seawater concentration, accounting for the hydrothermal input for all the metals considered. Iron is the predominant metal (5-50 mu M) followed by Zn and Cu. Cd and Pb are present at the nM level. At the scale studied, the behavior of temperature, pH and dissolved iron is semi-conservative whereas the other dissolved and particulate metals are characterized by non-conservative patterns. The metal enrichment of the >2 mu m fraction results from the settlement and accumulation of particulate...

Distribution and behavior of dissolved hydrogen sulfide in hydrothermal plumes ArchiMer
Radford Knoery, Joel; German, C; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Fouquet, Yves.
Through the deep ocean, hydrothermal plumes disperse high concentrations of key chemical tracers including He-3, CH4, Mn, Fe, H2S, etc. This paper focuses on the distribution and behavior of total dissolved sulfide (sulfide hereafter) in hydrothermal plumes to show that its plume concentration decreases to subnanomolar a few kilometers from the vents. We also report on sulfide removal rates determined at in situ conditions; we observe that they are two orders of magnitude greater than for open ocean seawater, consistent with sulfide being detected only in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents. From our observations, we infer that the sole presence of sulfide in hydrothermal plumes locates active venting at the kilometer scale.

Mai, Huong.
The coastal areas are subject to multiple anthropogenic pressures including chemical pollution that can pose a real risk to the sustainability of aquatic species. The Arcachon Bay, macrotidal lagoon located on the French Atlantic coast, is the important ecosystem for oyster farming. But for several years, the oyster farms face lower recruitment and high mortality of oyster spat. Chemical contamination of the environment as a factor that may contribute to the observed effects on oysters has so far not been investigated. The present thesis aimed at evaluating through different approaches, of the potential toxicity of heavy metals and pesticides representative of the Arcachon Bay contamination on the early life stages of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas....

Functionalized Charcoal as a Buffering Matrix of Copper and Zinc Availability Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Guimarães,Gelton Geraldo Fernandes; Giroto,Amanda Soares; Teixeira,Breno Cardoso; Vergütz,Leonardus; Cantarutti,Reinaldo Bertola.
ABSTRACT: High copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) contents in soil can cause phytotoxicity to plants and contaminate surface and groundwater, with negative effects on agriculture and the environment. Functionalized charcoal (OCh) has high cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the ability to adsorb Cu and Zn and control their availability in the soil and water. An adsorption study at two pH levels was carried out to evaluate increasing Cu and Zn sorption capacity provided by the functionalization process of a charcoal. In addition, a kinetics study of competitive and non-competitive adsorption-desorption of Cu and Zn in OCh was also evaluated. The results showed that functionalized charcoal (Ch) increased CEC 8.7 times due to an increase in carboxyl and phenolic...

Geochemistry of acid mine drainage from a coal mining area and processes controlling metal attenuation in stream waters, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAMPANER,VERIDIANA P.; LUIZ-SILVA,WANILSON; MACHADO,WILSON.
Acid drainage influence on the water and sediment quality was investigated in a coal mining area (southern Brazil). Mine drainage showed pH between 3.2 and 4.6 and elevated concentrations of sulfate, As and metals, of which, Fe, Mn and Zn exceeded the limits for the emission of effluents stated in the Brazilian legislation. Arsenic also exceeded the limit, but only slightly. Groundwater monitoring wells from active mines and tailings piles showed pH interval and chemical concentrations similar to those of mine drainage. However, the river and ground water samples of municipal public water supplies revealed a pH range from 7.2 to 7.5 and low chemical concentrations, although Cd concentration slightly exceeded the limit adopted by Brazilian legislation for...

Growth and metal uptake of microalgae produced using salt groundwaters from the Bay of Bourgneuf ArchiMer
Gagneux Moreaux, Sindy; Cosson, Richard P.; Bustamante, Paco; Moreau, Christophe.
The Bay of Bourgneuf, France, is a main site of shellfish production. In the marshes along the bay, oyster intensive rearing and fattening need the mass production of microalgae. Salt groundwaters, available in this region, support a large part of this production for aquaculture. Studies carried out by local authorities have brought to the fore the accumulation of lead (Pb) in several samples of algal pastes derived from cultures using salt groundwater. The aim of this study was to compare growth, nutritional value and metal (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) uptake of four microalgae grown in two salt groundwaters or in enriched coastal seawater. Cultures of microalgae used in aquaculture (Haslea ostrearia, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema costatum and Tetraselmis...

Growth and volatile compounds of Martianthus leucocephalus exposed to heavy metal stress Ciência Rural
Jesus,Daniel da Silva de; Azevedo,Bianca Oliveira de; Pinelli,Milena Santos; Korn,Maria das Graças Andrade; Azevedo Neto,André Dias de; Lucchese,Angélica Maria; Oliveira,Lenaldo Muniz de.
ABSTRACT: Martianthus leucocephalus is found in the semi-arid Northeast of Brazil and has high pharmacological potential due to the production of volatile compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the Cd (15, 30, 45 and 60µmol L-1), Cu (30, 60, 90 and 120µmol L-1) and Zn (150, 300, 450 and 600µmol L-1) levels on the growth of this species and its volatile compounds production. Apical cuttings were placed in plastic trays containing 6.0L nutrient solution, and after rooting, they were submitted to Cd, Cu and Zn treatments for 15 days. All the metals evaluated reduced the succulence and growth of all parts of M. leucocephalus . This effect was accompanied by the increase of Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations in all plant tissues. Volatile compounds content produced...

In situ measurement with diffusive gradients in thin films: effect of biofouling in freshwater ArchiMer
Uher, Emmanuelle; Compere, Chantal; Combe, Matthieu; Mazeas, Florence; Gourlay-france, Catherine.
Concerning in situ passive sampler deployment, several technical priorities must be considered. In particular, deployment time must be sufficiently long not only to allow a significant quantity to be accumulated to facilitate analysis but also to ensure that the signal is above the quantification limit and out of the blank influence. Moreover, regarding the diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique, deployment time must also be sufficiently long (at least 5 days) to avoid the interactions of the solutes with the material diffusion layer of the DGT and for the steady state to be reached in the gel. However, biofouling occurs in situ and modifies the surface of the samplers. In this article, we propose a kinetic model which highlights the biofouling...

Influence hydrothermale dans les sédiments de fosses de la mer Rouge par l'étude de quelques éléments traces ArchiMer
Pierret, Marie Claire; Clauer, Norbert; Blanc, Gerard.
The Cu, Ni, Fe, Cr and Zr concentrations were evaluated to study the influence of hydrothermal activity on the sediments of six Red-Sea deeps. Comparison between the Ni/Fe and Cu/Fe ratios supports distinction between hydrothermal and non-hydrothermal sediments, whereas anti-correlation between Zr and Cr concentrations results from hydrothermal influence. The results allow us to envisage that the sediments of the Suakin Deep did not undergo a hydrothermal activity and that this hydrothermal influence was weak in the Valdivia Deep. The sediments of Port-Soudan Deep recorded a hydrothermal activity, whereas this activity was the strongest in the Thetis and Atlantis II deeps.

Inhibition of iron and copper uptake by iron, copper and zinc Biol. Res.
ARREDONDO,MIGUEL; MARTÍNEZ,RONNY; NÚÑEZ,MARCO T; RUZ,MANUEL; OLIVARES,MANUEL.
Interactions of micronutrients can affect absorption and bioavailability of other nutrients by a number of mechanisms. In aqueous solutions, and at higher uptake levels, competition between elements with similar chemical characteristics and uptake process can take place. The consequences of these interactions may depend on the relative concentrations of the nutrients. In this work, we measure the effects of increasing concentrations of iron, zinc, and copper on iron and copper uptake in Caco-2 cells. Intracellular Fe or Cu levels were affected by incubating with increased concentrations of metals. However, when the cells already had different intracellular metal concentration, the uptake of Fe or Cu was nor affected. In competition studies, we showed that...

Inter-specific and ontogenic differences in delta C-13 and delta N-15 values and Hg and Cd concentrations in cephalopods ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Spitz, Jerome; Cherel, Y.; Caurant, Florence; Sirmel, R.; Mendez-fernandez, P.; Bustamante, Paco.
Chemical tracers (e. g. stable isotopes or trace metals) are increasingly used to study trophic ecology and feeding habits of marine organisms and various factors can affect their values. The aim of the present study was to provide information on ontogenic effects on stable carbon and nitrogen values (delta C-13 and delta N-15) and on cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) concentrations in 5 cephalopod species from the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic Ocean). To this end, individuals belonging to 3 species showing the widest range of sizes were analysed for muscle delta C-13 and delta N-15 values and muscle Hg, and digestive gland Cd concentrations. Results showed that stable isotope ratios allowed discrimination of specific feeding strategies during...
